Stephen Frears's "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid" : Shashi Kapoor, Claire Bloom

Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987)
Stephen Frears's second collaboration with screenwriter Hanif Kureshi. The mileu is similar to "My Beautiful Laundrette" but the anger is much more palpable. The British empire reduces to a shadow of its former self confronts multi-racial and mult-cultural tsunami. Shashi Kapoor is the corrupt Pakistani's politician with blood on his hands (are there any other types of Pakistani Politicians?) looking for redemption in his "beloved" England. His estranged son and his bleeding heart liberal daughter in law alternately humor and humiliate him.
The screenwriting is several notches below "My Beautiful Laundrette", but the anger, multicultural energy and unabashed left wing politics sustain the film. Claire Bloom and Frances Barber give thrilling performances.
