Chidambaram Pillai (Sivaji Ganesan) is a qualified lawyer for whom the country comes before self. He emerges as a revolutionary leader who struggles to free the nation from the clutches of the Britishers. He even starts his own shipping company as a stepping stone to the 'Swadesi' movement. This company is a huge success and proves to be a tough competition to the British shipping companies. On the one hand, Chidambaram Pillai's doings earn him the love and respect of many while on the other, he ends up making foes, too. He soon gets arrested for taking part in the freedom struggle and is sent to jail. His friends Madasamy (Gemini Ganesan) and Bharathiyar (S.V. Subbiah), who share his patriotic sentiments, take the freedom struggle ahead. When Pillai is released from jail, he realizes that his shipping company has been sold to the British. He is devastated, but continues to work for India's independence. Does his dream for a free and independent India come true?
