Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is a 2002 South Korean film directed by Park Chan-wook which follows the character Ryu trying to earn enough money for his sister's kidney transplant and the path of vengeance that follows. It is the first part of The Vengeance Trilogy and is followed by Oldboy (2003) and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005).

Ryu (Shin Ha-kyun), is a deaf-mute man working in a factory to support his ailing sister (Lim Ji-eun), who is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. As Ryu is not a match, and he is laid off from his job, Ryu contacts a black market organ dealer, and agrees to exchange his savings and one of his own kidneys in exchange for a matching one; the dealers perform the operation, but disappear after taking Ryu's kidney and money. Three weeks later, Ryu learns from his doctor that a donor has been found, but Ryu is unable to afford the operation now.

In need of money for the operation and in retaliation for his being fired, Yeong-mi (Bae Doona), Ryu's radical anarchist girlfriend, helps him to kidnap Yu-sun, the daughter of factory executive Dong-jin. The girl stays with Ryu's sister, who believes Ryu is merely babysitting her; concurrently, Ryu and Yeong-mi collect the ransom from Dong-jin. After collecting the money, Ryu finds his sister discovered his plan, and that she committed suicide as she was unwilling to be involved or to burden Ryu. Ryu takes Yu-sun and his sister's body to a suburban riverbed they used to frequent as children; while Ryu buries his sister, Yu-sun accidentally slips into the river and drowns.

As Dong-jin mourns his daughter, he hires an investigator to help find Yu-sun's kidnappers, and realizes those he laid off may seek revenge. Meanwhile, Ryu locates, ambushes and murders the organ dealers. Dong-jin, receiving help from several sources, finds Yeong-mi and interrogates her; Yeong-mi apologizes for Yu-sun's death, but warns him of an terrorist group she is part of that will find and kill Dong-jin if he kills her. Dong-jin, unfazed by Yeong-mi's threats, electrocutes her to death. Ryu returns to Yeong-mi's apartment building and discovers the police removing her corpse. Dong-jin's investigator is informed that Yeong-mi's "terrorist group" consisted solely of her.

Ryu and Dong-jin wait at each other's residence in an attempt to kill the other; Ryu is the first to return home and, unaware of an electric booby trap on his doorknob, is rendered unconscious. Dong-jin binds Ryu and returns him to the riverbed where Yu-sun died. After binding Ryu's hands and feet and bringing him chest-high into the water, an emotional Dong-jin acknowledges that although Ryu is a good man, he has no choice; Dong-jin then slashes Ryu's Achilles tendons, resulting in his bleeding to death.

Dong-jin drags Ryu back to shore and begins to dig a hole, but soon a group of men arrives. They surround and stab Dong-jin repeatedly, finally attaching a note to his chest identifying themselves as the terrorist group which Yeong-mi was affiliated with. The group leaves Dong-jin dying beside his car with the bloody tools and bags containing Ryu's body.

Throughout his work, documentary filmmaker Errol Morris has sought out characters lost in their own eccentric worlds, and he has managed to convey their sense of wonder with their passion, be it a topiary gardener arguing the merits of hand shears in Fast, Cheap & Out of Control (1997) or astrophysicist Stephen Hawking discussing the origin of the universe in A Brief History of Time (1992). In his most provocative work since The Thin Blue Line (1988), Morris details what happens when this interior dreamscape collides with the hard facts of history. As a young man accompanying his father to work at a state prison, Fred A. Leuchter, a bespectacled mouse of a man, learned how inefficient and inhumane most executions were, and he set out to design and build a better electric chair. Soon he began getting offers from state institutions throughout the country to redesign their electric chairs, along with gas chambers, gallows, and lethal injection machines. He quickly became a renowned expert in capital punishment. When the notorious Nazi sympathizer Ernest Zündel was arrested in Canada, he needed an expert witness to corroborate his assertion that the Holocaust was a hoax; and Leuchter soon found himself chiseling chunks from the gas chamber walls in Auschwitz -- on his honeymoon. His illegal samples showed no significant residue of cyanide, so he concluded that the Holocaust did not happen. He soon became a celebrity of the neo-Nazi set: he testified on behalf of Zündel, gave lectures around the world, and published the Holocaust revisionist tract Leuchter Report. Much to his surprise, his death-machine business began to flounder, his marriage collapsed, and he found himself pursued by Jewish organizations and creditors. This film was screened at the 1999 Toronto Film Festival.

An athletic yachtsman makes a bet that he can swim ashore on an island and live like Robinson Crusoe. He manages to tame the environment and meet a pretty young woman fleeing a nearby wedding.
