Sonny Steele (Robert Redford) is a 5 times rodeo champion who is battling the bottle as he tours adverting a breakfast cereal, Sonny arrives in Las Vegas to perform when he learns that a champion horse called Rising Star is being drugged, Sonny steals the horse and heads off into the mountains to protect the horse followed by Hallie (Jane Fonda) a newswoman who will stop at nothing to get her story.
