Bem no meio do deserto do Saara cai um avião de carga. O piloto Frank Towns (James Stewart) e o navegador Lew Moran (Richard Attenborough) tentam fazer o possível para manter a ordem entre os sobreviventes, homens ligados a indústria petrolífera que não sabem sobreviver no deserto. Alguns se mostram ineptos ou covardes, apesar de se esperar deles alguma determinação, enquanto outros, que se esperava pouco, demonstram uma força interior, principalmente Standish (Dan Dureya). No entanto o destino de fortes e fracos está nas mãos de Heinrich Dorfmann (Hardy Krüger), que disse ser um projetista de aviões e planeja usar os destroços do avião para fazer outro.
